In the world of large language models, the battle for supremacy continues to unfold. While ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, has garnered significant attention, DeepMind, the renowned research lab under the Google umbrella, claims to be working on a language model that could rival, or even surpass, OpenAI's creation.
Drawing on techniques from AlphaGo, DeepMind's groundbreaking AI system that famously defeated a professional human player in the ancient game of Go, the research lab is now focusing its efforts on developing Gemini, a chatbot with the potential to rival ChatGPT. Wired recently reported that Gemini will not only possess advanced language capabilities but will also incorporate problem-solving and planning abilities.
DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, in an interview with Wired's Will Knight, described Gemini as an amalgamation of the strengths seen in AlphaGo-type systems and the language prowess demonstrated by large models like ChatGPT. With some new innovations in the pipeline, Gemini aims to overcome the limitations faced by current language models by leveraging reinforcement learning techniques.
Reinforcement learning, a process of rewarding and penalizing AI systems based on desired and undesired behaviors, respectively, has already played a significant role in advancing language models such as ChatGPT. DeepMind, with its extensive expertise in reinforcement learning, including the groundbreaking achievements of AlphaGo, is eager to apply these learnings to the generative AI domain.
Gemini was briefly previewed during Google's I/O developer conference in May, where it caught the attention of many. Wired's Knight speculates that Gemini's development will incorporate advancements in reinforcement learning to tackle tasks that pose challenges for existing language models.
While DeepMind has previously explored language models, such as the development of Sparrow, a chatbot designed to provide safer and more appropriate responses, Gemini represents the lab's most ambitious venture in this space. Reports indicate that Gemini, propelled by Google's determination to match the capabilities of ChatGPT and with the direct involvement of key figures like Jeff Dean, Google's senior AI research executive, aims to push the boundaries of generative AI.
The race for dominance in the generative AI arena comes at a time of immense investor and customer enthusiasm. According to Grand View Research, the market for generative AI, including text-analyzing AI like Gemini, is projected to reach a staggering $109.37 billion by 2030, representing a remarkable 35.6% increase from 2023.
