Serengeti safaris are some of the best on the continent. Located in northern Tanzania, the Serengeti National Park is home to an abundance of wildlife including the Big Five safari animals, and the famous wildebeest migration. Although it varies slightly each year (depending on rain patterns), the migration herds can be seen throughout the year from the Serengeti. Here is a guide of some of the best Serengeti safari camps to stay in for exceptional sightings of the wildebeest herds.
Best camps to see the wildebeest herds in the Serengeti
1. Singita Sabora
Located in the Grumeti Reserve in the Western Serengeti, this luxury tented lodge is a fantastic option for those looking to push the boat and stay in somewhere seriously special. While it’s a tented camp, each suite has its own private meditation deck, an outdoor veranda and a private fitness area. This is additional to the dining and lounge areas around Singita Sabora. Sat on a private area of 350,000 acres of land, game viewing from this safari lodge is good year-round, but heightened between April and June/July when the migration herds make their way through the Grumeti plains. On top of the resident wildlife, the herds crossing the Grumeti River and the predators that come with them can be enjoyed as an exclusive safari experience from Singita Sabora.
2. Namiri Plains - Eastern Serengeti
Recently renovated, Namiri Plains is one of the Asilia flagship camps, and rightly so. The camp is luxurious in every sense, with outdoor free-standing baths, private verandas, and beautifully-designed rooms. Namiri Plains is located in the eastern Serengeti and can be accessed from the Seronera airstrip (with a game drive on route). The herds pass through this area around the November/ December time, as they make their way down to the southern Serengeti. This luxury camp sits on an area of land that was closed off to the public for over 30 years in an effort to replenish the cheetah population. Today, game viewing from Namiri Plains is exceptional, with cheetah, lion, leopard, elephant, and wildebeest aplenty.
3. Olakira Migration Camp
This is a fantastic option for those interested in mobile tents for their safari accommodation. This is essentially the same as other luxury safari tents, but the great thing about them is that they move throughout the year to follow the location of the wildebeest herds. Olakira Migration Camp is one of our favorites. Not only is the camp intimate and very authentic in its safari design and feel, but it offers something that few camps offer – the ability to stargaze from your bed. Nothing quite beats having an exciting day on safari to then enjoy the glistening African night sky from the comfort of your bed.
4. Mwiba Lodge
Located on its own private concession adjoining the southern plains of the Serengeti, Mwiba Lodge is located in a private 129,530-acre wildlife reserve. This means that private game drives and uninterrupted wildlife experiences can be enjoyed for guests at Mwiba Lodge. Because of its location on private land, an African safari here is very diverse, with bush walks, fly camping, day and night game drives, sundowners, and cultural experiences on offer. The lodge overlooks a rocky gorge on the Arugusinyai River – one of the most breathtaking views in the Serengeti. With stunning design and decor, and a host of amenities on offer, you couldn’t ask for more at Mwiba Lodge.
5. Nomad Lamai
Located in the northern plains of the Serengeti National Park is Nomad’s flagship camp – Lamai. This lodge sits close to the Mara River, so river crossing points (of which there are around ten on the Serengeti side) are accessible when the migration herds decide to cross. Nomad Lamai offers fantastic resident wildlife year-round, but to see the herds, stay there between the July to October window. The end of June is also a good time to consider – as the herds sometimes arrive earlier in the northern plains.
6. Dunia Camp
Located in the heart of the Seronera region of the Serengeti, Dunia Camp is a female-run luxury safari camp offering a fantastic safari experience. As part of the Asilia portfolio, these women do a great job of running the camp. The chefs, safari guides, housekeepers… you name it, they are all women. The benefit of being in the central plains of the Serengeti is that you can combine it with another destination in an itinerary, such as the Ngorongoro Crater or Lake Manyara National Park. The other benefit is that you can see the migration herds during two different times of the year – between March and May, and then again in November to December window.
