When to go to Germany

There is no one best time to visit Germany as there’s a reason to go in every season. You’ll need to consider your interests, special events, the weather, and crowd levels. The most pleasant weather is enjoyed between May and September, with average high temperatures ranging from 68 to 77 degrees. The tourist crowds are thickest in July and August, with May and the second half of September bringing good weather without being as busy. If you want to attend Munich’s Oktoberfest, it starts around the first day of fall and runs for two weeks.

Spring

March through May is considered a shoulder season, but if you have the option, May is the best springtime month to visit Germany, especially Berlin. Temperatures are often idyllic, ranging from around 65 to 70 degrees on average while the cherry trees bring beautiful blossoms across the landscapes. There might be a bit of rain but you’re more likely to enjoy abundant sunshine along with longer days for sightseeing and outdoor activities. While there will be tourists around, it won’t be nearly as crowded as the peak summer months.

Summer

June through August is the high season in Germany, the busiest and warmest time to visit. If you come now you’ll need to book your reservations well in advance and be prepared to pay some of the highest prices of the year. On the plus side, the weather makes it a great time for outdoor activities and lively festivals like the unique three-week German American Folk Festival in Berlin that focuses on the American way of life with American foods, vintage cars, rides, and more.

Fall

September through November is generally autumn, but early September is technically summer, with the crowds thinning around the middle of the month. There is an exception with Munich’s Oktoberfest kicking off around the start of fall bringing millions to the city. If you’re planning to attend, consider this part of the high season by booking well ahead. In other areas, it’s a shoulder season, a good compromise between the busy high season and the chillier low season. Enjoy warmer weather from September through early October. The rest of October is wetter but offers brilliant autumn hues and a more budget-friendly trip.

Winter

November through February is the low season. While winter doesn’t technically begin until mid-December, dark and dreary, cold days are common from November on. Some places experience frequent freezing rain while others get snow, particularly in the east and south. Outside of the holiday period, this is the quietest and least expensive time to visit. That said, spending Christmas in Germany is something everyone should do at least once in a lifetime. Nearly every city hosts one and some have multiple holiday markets, including Berlin with over 80.
