The CEO of Tesla recently concluded a visit to China for the first time post-pandemic. During his whirlwind 48-hour stay, Elon Musk met with various government officials and expressed his gratitude to the workers at Tesla's massive factory in Shanghai. Musk's private jet departed from Shanghai's Hongqiao airport on June 1, as reported by Variflight, a Chinese flight data app.
Before his departure, Musk met Chen Jining, the Communist Party chief of Shanghai, as announced by the city government. Chen encouraged Tesla to further expand its investment and operations in Shanghai and bring more innovative products, technologies, and services to the city. Musk lauded the success of Tesla's Shanghai facility, which commenced operations in 2019, and expressed his eagerness to collaborate with the city on various fronts, according to the statement.
Musk visited the Gigafactory in Shanghai, where he addressed a large gathering of workers: “I would very much like to congratulate you on the amazing work that you have done”. He added in his speech, “It’s been incredibly impressive how you have been able to overcome so many difficulties and so many challenges”. Musk then made a “heart” sign with his hands, declaring: “I tell people throughout the world, the cars we produce here are not just the most efficient production, but also the highest quality”.
The Shanghai Gigafactory is Tesla's largest car manufacturing plant outside the United States. In 2022, the factory played a significant role in Tesla's global delivery of 1.31 million vehicles, accounting for over half of the total, according to the company's financial results.
Musk’s trip to China included separate meetings with the tech and commerce ministers, discussing topics such as electric vehicles, connected cars, US-China relations, and Tesla's development in China, as confirmed by government releases. During his visit, Musk refrained from posting on Twitter, which is blocked in China, but he later shared his experiences on both Twitter and Weibo, China's equivalent social media platform.
Elon Musk's visit to China highlights the significance of Tesla's operations in the country and showcases the strong collaboration between Tesla and its Chinese partners as they strive for excellence in producing high-quality electric vehicles.
