Dublin Airport takes a significant step towards ensuring safe skies as it announces the successful installation and readiness of its anti-drone technology. To combat illegal drone activities, which led to multiple flight disruptions earlier this year, the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) acquired and implemented this cutting-edge counter-drone system.
During the first two months of 2023 alone, Dublin Airport faced six closures due to rogue drone incidents. These unauthorized drone operations not only inconvenienced passengers but also posed safety risks. A 30-minute flight suspension was enforced in February, while other sightings prompted flight diversions.
To address this pressing issue, DAA procured anti-drone technology and diligently trained its personnel in its operation. This move was facilitated by recent amendments to Irish legislation, with the Communications Regulator (ComReg) subsequently granting a license to deploy this counter-drone solution.
The adopted anti-drone equipment can detect and disrupt communication between a drone and its operator, providing a robust defense against unauthorized drone flights. Similar technology had previously been deployed at London airports following widespread disruptions.
A DAA spokesperson affirmed the operational readiness of the anti-drone system in Dublin, emphasizing its availability whenever the need arises. Furthermore, a strong message was sent to all drone enthusiasts, reminding them of the strict prohibition against operating drones within a 5km radius of any Irish airport.
