Founded in 2015, TuSimple was a trailblazer in the race to develop fully driverless trucks for efficient goods transportation. The company's approach garnered attention, securing a brief contract in 2019 to handle mail delivery for the U.S. Postal Service between Phoenix and Dallas. However, the journey took unexpected turns as the company, though positioning itself as an American startup, faced scrutiny due to its Chinese roots. Going public in 2021, TuSimple became the focus of investigations by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, the FBI, and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Despite early success, TuSimple encountered significant hurdles, losing a crucial deal with trucking giant Navistar in 2022. This setback, coupled with changing priorities, prompted the company to shift gears throughout 2023, leading to the decision to exit the U.S. market entirely in December. The repercussions were felt across the organization, with over 150 layoffs and a subsequent fall in share prices from a high of $62.58 in July 2021 to a mere $0.73 today.
As ten autonomous trucks, along with research and development equipment, and office supplies, go under the virtual gavel in two online auctions (January 23-25 and February 6-8), TuSimple's journey takes an unexpected turn.
