Multiple Orbits: Eutelsat, Intelsat satellites join OneWeb’s constellation

Eutelsat and Intelsat join forces with OneWeb to provide unmatched connectivity.

On 9 March 2023, Eutelsat and Intelsat signed a multi-orbit capacity agreement with OneWeb’s broadband network to enhance connectivity in Europe, Middle-East, and the Pacific. Eutelsat and Intelsat have fleets of satellites in the geostationary orbit (GEO), while OneWeb has an established network in the low earth orbit (LEO). This agreement is worth millions of euros and grants the corporations access to more than one of the Earth’s orbits.

The contract is valid for seven years and the resources will be exchanged gradually across 2023. A previous deal between Eutelsat and Gogo Commercial Aviation about Eutelsat’s 10B satellite was aquired by Intelsat in 2020. The 10B satellite’s connectivity is now refined with OneWeb’s LEO network and Eutelsats GEO assets. The collaboration ensures unmatched and ubiquitous internet on land, sea, and air.

As a note on their partnership, the managing director of the connectivity branch in Eutelsat along with Ben Griffin, the vice-president of OneWeb stated, “Eutelsat and OneWeb are proud to work together to provide Intelsat with a complete range of connectivity services. This truly hybrid approach paves the way for the implementation of complete connectivity solutions, whether in the sky, at sea or on the ground. Ultimately, this new formula makes it possible to offer customers the best of both worlds in a perfectly transparent and integrated approach”.

A robust and democratised internet access is becoming an event of the present, as companies to share satellites to deliver wider coverage and better connectivity. Collaborations reduce the cost of launching and maintaining satellites, leading to affordable prices for end-users.
