ChatGPT’s mobile app surpassed 500,000 downloads within six days of its release. Despite being initially limited to the U.S. and iOS, the app's popularity has soared, positioning it as one of the top-performing new app releases in recent times.
The ChatGPT app offers users an ad-free experience and can be freely downloaded on iPhones. Users can engage with the chatbot powered by generative AI and enjoy the added convenience of voice input, made possible by OpenAI's Whisper speech recognition system. Additionally, ChatGPT Plus subscribers can unlock advanced functionalities powered by GPT-4. For those interested, the app provides the option to subscribe to the ChatGPT Plus service directly through the iOS app, priced at $20 per month in the U.S. Within a week of launching in the United States, as of 26 May 2023, OpenAI has rendered the ChatGPT application available for iOS users in France, Germany, India and about 30 other countries, including Algeria, Canada, Estonia, Tunisia, Peru, Slovenia, and more.
The popularity of AI chatbots has given rise to a large number of third-party apps in the App Store, but many of them are deceptive and intended to trick users into paying for expensive subscriptions. Despite these challenges, OpenAI's ChatGPT app managed to outshine its rivals, including other prominent AI and chatbot apps like Microsoft's Bing and Edge. Comparing ChatGPT with Bing and Edge's iOS downloads alone, ChatGPT significantly outperformed them with its 480,000 installs, while Bing recorded 250,000 installs and Edge had 195,000. Although Bing and Edge still maintained an edge over ChatGPT when considering all U.S. downloads in May across both app stores, the data suggests that ChatGPT may soon overtake these search-focused alternatives, particularly in the iOS category.
In a short span of time, ChatGPT has already established itself as one of the top AI chatbot apps in terms of downloads in the United States in May 2023. By the time of data.ai's analysis, ChatGPT had accumulated 550,000 downloads, tying with Genie. Several other apps held higher positions, but it is only a matter of time before ChatGPT monopolizes the App Store.
