In a groundbreaking announcement, Rick Osterloh, Senior Vice President of Devices and Services at Google, revealed that the forthcoming Pixel 8 Pro will usher in a new era of on-device AI capabilities. The Pixel 8 Pro will be the very first hardware to harness the power of Google's generative AI models directly on the device itself.
At the heart of this technological leap is the custom-designed Tensor G3 chip, meticulously crafted to turbocharge AI workloads. With this innovative chip, the Pixel 8 Pro can seamlessly execute condensed versions of Google's text and image generation models, opening up a world of possibilities, particularly in image editing.
Collaborating closely with Google's research teams, the Pixel 8 Pro leverages advanced foundation models, distilled into an efficient version optimized for the flagship device. The result? A smartphone that takes on complex AI tasks effortlessly, all thanks to on-device processing.
One of the most notable enhancements enabled by on-device models is the transformative upgrade to Google's Magic Eraser, the tool for perfecting photos. This improved Magic Eraser can effortlessly erase larger objects and even people from images, leaving behind a flawless, unblemished result. It achieves this by generating new pixels to seamlessly fill the gaps, ensuring a higher-quality finished image.
Zoom capabilities will also see a substantial boost, with a new on-device model intelligently sharpening and enhancing photo details. This enhancement promises to take smartphone photography to new heights.
Furthermore, on-device processing extends its benefits to audio recording. The Pixel 8 Pro's recording app will soon provide comprehensive summaries of recorded meetings, highlighting key moments for easy reference.
But that's not all. A robust language model embedded within the Pixel 8 Pro will supercharge smart replies in the Gboard keyboard app. Osterloh assures that the upgraded Gboard will deliver "higher-quality" reply suggestions, boasting improved conversational awareness.
While Magic Eraser will be available right from the Pixel 8 Pro's launch, the full array of on-device generative AI features is slated to arrive in December through an update, according to Osterloh.
